Come on a camping trip on Mount Esja for an incredible shot at seeing the ethereal Northern Lights. This tour should appeal to any who love the great outdoors, and want to tick seeing the auroras off of their bucket lists in a unique way.
This tour begins when you are picked up from Reykjavík in the afternoon, and driven for half an hour to the base of the mountain. Mount Esja is the flat-topped peak that can be seen all over Reykjavík by looking across the waters of Faxaflói Bay.
There are several routes to the top of the mountain, and you will take the one that best meets the needs of your group. At the peak, you will set up camp, have a warm traditional Icelandic meal, and wait for the lights.
When they descend, you will see that it was well worth the hike to see them. Their magical presence in the skies over west Iceland will transform beautiful scenery into something otherworldly, and no doubt you will be struck in awe. Your guide will be on hand to help you photograph them if need be.
The next morning, you’ll wake up to fresh alpine air, have a hearty breakfast, then descend the mountain back to the van. You’ll drive back to Reykjavík, with enough time to make other plans for the rest of your day.
Don’t miss this opportunity to camp on Mount Esja and watch the Northern Lights! Check availability by choosing a date.
Esja is a wonderland of trees, wildflowers, rivers, and often snowscapes. The route to the top is challenging, but by no means impossible for those who are reasonably fit, and the views over Reykjavík and Faxaflói are mesmerising.
At the top, you will set up your camp, then gather around a hot meal as you wait for the aurora borealis. Of course, nature can be fickle, and they may not show, but your tour will only run if your chances are good.
After a hopefully spectacular display, you will huddle in your tent for a refreshing night’s sleep breathing beautiful mountain air.
Once you get to the van, you’ll return to Reykjavík in good time to enjoy the rest of your day.
The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and can never be fully guaranteed to appear on any given night.
Please note that this tour is weather and conditions dependent.
