East Iceland is characterised by its sharp-peaked mountain ranges and rugged coastlines.

Step off the beaten track and stay at a hotel in the far-flung countryside, only 5 minutes drive away from the small village of Breiðdalsvík.

Each day you can hike through untouched nature and marvel at incredible geological formations or take an optional reindeer trekking tour with an expert local guide. In the evenings, you can relax in the Finnish-style sauna at Hotel Staðarborg or cuddle up with a good book by the hotel’s cosy fireplace.

On your first night, you will be taken out by a local guide, scouting for the Northern Lights. Your guide will take you out with a Super Jeep to find the most picturesque sites with the best chances for Northern Lights sightings and tell you all about those magical lights as well as some local myths and legends.

In this remote corner of the world, far away from all light pollution, the Aurora shine more brightly in the night sky. Note that if weather conditions do not permit Northern Lights viewing, then this activity will be moved to another night.

This tour package is ideal for those who are driving the ring road and want some extra time in the beautiful East fjords of Iceland, or if you are coming East by flight, a rental car can be arranged for an additional charge.

Over the next days, you will be able to explore the nearby area at your own pace, sightseeing, hiking and getting to know the local life. For those days, you will receive a map of the area with interesting sights, as well as an itinerary with suggestions on what to do in each town along the fjords.

Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival

Green ribbons of the Northern Lights flying across a fjord in East Iceland.

On your first day, you will arrive at Hotel Staðarborg, where the staff will welcome you to your accommodation for the next few days. Make sure to check-in, get comfortable and organise your camera gear, for you're going to be photographing the skies throughout night.

Beforehand, however, you will have dinner at the cosy hotel restaurant. Afterwards, your guide will pick you up for a Northern Lights excursion in the countryside. Thankfully, your professional and experienced guides will be more than aware of the best stops, far from light pollution.

Finally, when the Northern Lights appear, you will be privy to an incredible display of green, red and yellow light ribbons dancing across the clear night sky. This is truly a wonder of nature, so make sure to soak in every single moment.

When your time viewing the lights is over, you will head back to rest at your accommodation at Hotel Staðarborg.

Day 2 - Relax

The landscapes of East Iceland are some of the most stunning in the whole country.

It is your second day of this Northern Lights tour, and so it is time to enjoy the relaxing ambience of the surrounding area. For instance, you could take a walk in the beautiful nature, relax in the sauna and the jacuzzi or cosy up by the fireplace and read a good book.

If you decide to, you can take an optional tour with local guides looking for the wild reindeer living in East Iceland. East Iceland is the only part of the country where herds of wild reindeer roam free, having lived in the region since early settlers brought them to Iceland from Norway.

In the evening, you will once again head out into the countryside to look for the Northern Lights. Afterwards, you will return to Hotel Staðarborg.

Day 3 - Relax

A herd of wild reindeer in East Iceland

Today, just like yesterday, you have the freedom to tailor your day to your desires or book an optional activity for either the full day or a part of the day.

You can even spend the day in relaxation without leaving your hotel if that is your desire.

As with the previous days, you will spend the evening in the company of your Northern Lights guides, ever scoping out the skies for any sign of the Aurora Borealis.

Day 4 - Departure

Two Icelandic horses in East Iceland

Now you will head on with your journey around Iceland after these relaxing days at Hotel Staðarborg.

Depending on the direction where you are headed you will be given local suggestions and advice on what you can do that day.

Some of you may drive south or north to continue your circle of Iceland while others may take a flight back to Reykjavík. Whichever direction you are planning to travel, you will be provided with all of the relevant information.
