The Snaefellsnes Peninsula and Borgarnes Town | Day Tour

The Snaefellsnes Peninsula and Borgarnes Town | Day Tour
Icelandic horses are sweet, sociable creatures.
The coastal scenery on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is one of its greatest attractions.
Snæfellsjökull is said to have a cave that will lead you on 'a journey to the centre of the earth'.
The Gerðuberg cliffs are the first site you are likely to see on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
Near Arnarstapi and Hellnar in particular, there are many seastacks and isles just off the coast.
Snæfellsnes is often called Iceland in Miniature due to the fact it has all the different features that make Iceland famous.

See many of Iceland’s features in one day of sightseeing, with this tour of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This excursion should not be missed by any who are eager to witness the best of Iceland’s nature and culture.

This tour starts when your friendly guide picks you up from Reykjavík and drives you and your group north to the Peninsula. About halfway through the journey, however, you will stop at the town of Borgarnes, a beautiful, historic settlement. While most Snæfellsnes tours only pause here for refreshment, your excursion will grant you an hour to explore.

The town is lovely to walk around, but its highlight is the Settlement Centre, which hosts two exhibitions on the earliest years of Iceland. A visit to these exhibitions is highly recommended but please note that admission is not included in the tour cost.

The first site you will come to on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is cliffs of Gerðuberg, a geological marvel. Here, you will see many hexagonal basalt columns, which can only be found in a few countries around the world, arranged in such perfect order that they barely seem natural.

Following this, you will head to the Eldborg crater; you can ascend the staircase here to see the shape of it from above, as well as some spectacular scenery from your elevated vantage point.

You’ll then travel across the southern side of the Peninsula to the coastal towns of Arnarstapi and Hellnar. These settlements are historic, picturesque, and renowned for their rugged coastal scenery. The most dramatic part of the coastline is the Lóndrangar basalt plug, a towering feature that somewhat resembles a castle. Keep an eye out for the birdlife here as it is booming in summer.

After admiring Lóndrangar, you’ll continue westward, into Snæfellsjökull National Park. This park is based around a glacier and volcano of the same name. In the famous Jules Verne novel, ‘A Journey to the Centre of the Earth’, this glacier was said to hold a cave to the depths of our planet, and a simple look upon it will inform you as to why artists and writers have often used it as a setting to their stories.

You’ll encircle Snæfellsjökull, admiring it throughout, then start to head east along the northern side of the peninsula. You’ll pass through several more beautiful fishing villages, until coming to the final major feature here, Kirkjufell. This standalone mountain, adjacent to a beautiful waterfall, is often titled ‘the most photographed peak in Iceland’, due to its scale, charisma, and the many great photographic locations around it.

After making the most of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula for a full day, your guide will return you to Reykjavík.
