Experience the barren interior and lunar-like landscapes of the Icelandic Highlands, on this day tour to Askja Caldera from Akureyri, with an added visit to Goðafoss Waterfall. If you’re staying in the North and wish to see some of the most celebrated highlights of the Icelandic wilderness, this is the excursion for you.

Your adventure begins with a pickup in the Capital of the North, Akureyri, where you will meet your experienced local guide and begin your journey to the barren landscapes of the Highlands of Iceland, stopping at Lake Mývatn amongst other short photo-opportunity locations.

You’ll be visiting iconic landmarks such as the Herðubreiðalindir Oasis, a lush nature reserve of the Ódáðahraun lava field; and the Drekagil Gully, an eerie, fairytale-like ravine named after a dragon. Your guide will also lead you to a number of other off-the-map sites and places, showing you where Icelandic outlaws hid out in their banishment during the Middle Ages.

The highlight of your trip, however, will be the Askja Caldera, surrounded by the rhyolite mountains of Dyngjufjöll, with peaks reaching up to 1,500 metres (5,000 feet) above sea-level. This very location was utilised by NASA to train their astronauts for the first lunar landing during the 1960s space race.

Hiking up to the caldera, you’ll immediately understand why the space program deemed this part of planet Earth to be the perfect training ground for walking on the surface of the moon. The landscapes at hand are truly otherworldly, especially the milky waters of lake Öskjuvatn within the bowl of the caldera.

During your journey, who knows, you might run into the ghosts of outlaws, night trolls, hidden people or other creatures that have allegedly haunted travellers for centuries. Before the tour is over, you will also visit one of the pearls of the North, the mighty waterfall Goðafoss, adding something extra to an already fantastic travel experience in Iceland.

Don’t miss out on this Highland adventure in the north of Iceland, witnessing lunar landscapes and cascading waterfalls. Check availability by choosing a date.

Good to know

● During the end of the tour, you'll break for refreshments at a café, but the stop is quite late, so a pre-packed lunch comes recommended.

● Due to weather and/or road conditions we might have to alter the itinerary, have longer journey time or cancel the tour

● Please note that we will be travelling to the Icelandic Highlands and that the weather can change unexpectedly. The weather up in Askja can be very different from the weather closer to the coast and colder. Because of it’s high altitude there can be snow on our hiking route well into the summer. Please be prepared for that and dress accordingly. Bring waterproof clothing and layers of woolen or fleece sweaters and under garments.

● There are no shops in the Icelandic Highlands, please bring lunch and snacks.
