Immerse yourself in the world beneath the surface of Iceland’s incredible landscapes on this combo tour that takes you inside a glacier and into a lava tube. This tour is a must for the adventurous, and those seeking to make the most of the unusual and fascinating experiences Iceland has to offer.
You will be picked up from Reykjavík in the morning, in a bus equipped with an ‘In-Bus Audio Guide’; this will allow you to listen to commentary about your surroundings in 10 different languages. The bus also has wifi and USB chargers, as well as an onboard guide who is happy to answer your questions. This vehicle will drive you through the beautiful landscapes of West Iceland, to the foot of the mighty Langjökull glacier. Here, you will switch into a specially modified super-jeep, perfectly designed for ascending the steep, icy slopes. As you travel to the mouth of the tunnels, the Icelandic Highlands will unfold around you, so keep your camera in your hand for these awe-inspiring landscapes.
The ice-tunnels into Langjökull are incredibly unique; they were carved by hand and machine into the sturdiest part of the glacier, meaning that they are accessible all year and safe to enter. Nowhere else in the world can you take a similar tour, making this a truly once-in-a-lifetime excursion.
For an hour, you will be guided through the stunning blue channels. An experienced English-speaking guide will lead you throughout, telling you all about how the glaciers formed, the science behind them, and what future they face. The path is well-lit and open, and the ground is smooth, making for a journey that is as comfortable as it is fascinating.
After exploring the ice-tunnels, the super-jeep will take you back to base-camp, where your old bus is waiting. From here, it will take you to the lava cave Viðgelmir. Viðgelmir, formed in an eruption in the 10th Century, is the largest of its kind in Iceland, at 1600 metres long, and (at its most open) over 15 metres high and 16 metres wide.
You will be provided with a helmet and light before entering the lava-tube. Because it is so open, Viðgelmir is easier to traverse than other lava caves (although you can still expect uneven ground beneath your feet). Your guide will take you through at a comfortable pace, telling you about the cave’s formation and fascinating history; they will also draw your attention to the cave’s most amazing features, such as its vivid colouration, its stalactites and its stalagmites.
After a thorough exploration, you will get back on the bus and be whisked to Reykjavík for an evening return.
