Take a day of your Icelandic vacation to explore Landmannalaugar and Hrauneyjar, at the edge of Iceland’s most eye-catching and active volcanic area. This journey should not be missed by anyone looking to experience the pristine Highlands of Iceland.

This region is one of the last areas before entering the wide lava fields and mountainous features of the Highlands and is centrally located near landmarks such as Fjallabak Nature Reserve, Þjórsárdalur valley, Mount Hekla, Sprengisandur plateau, and Veidivötn lakes.

After pickup, your journey will take you through the Þjórsádalur Valley with a stop at Hjálparfoss waterfall, one of the most unusual falls in Iceland. Located at the joining of two rivers, Fossá and Þjórsá, this waterfall forms an arc or bowl that flows in one long curve into the basin below.

Next, you’ll take in the sight of Ljótipolur crater. Its name means “ugly puddle” in Icelandic, but it is anything but. The minerals in the stone have painted the crater in stunning hues of orange, red and purple as the lava rock gently cups a pure blue-grey lake at the bottom. After this colourful explosion, you’ll be treated to the stark beauty of Landmannalaugar, part of the Laugahraun lava field, which was formed in an eruption around the year 1477.

You should take advantage of the natural hot springs abundant in this area and go for a swim. Bathing in a hot spring has many health benefits that native Icelanders have enjoyed for years.

The warm water is relaxing, raising the body temperature slowly and easing muscle pain. Also, bathing in a hot spring allows the skin to absorb minerals in the water such as sulphur, calcium, magnesium and lithium.

These minerals are important as they provide healing effects to the body, as well as having a therapeutic effect on any skin problems. If you prefer to stay dry, you can take a guided hike around the area and hear the history of the landscape from your knowledgeable guide.

If you wish to take a dip in the hot springs, don’t forget your swimming gear and towel in addition to sturdy shoes and warm clothes for hiking.

Don’t miss this day tour gallivanting in the countryside, topped off with a relaxing swim in a natural hot spring or an invigorating hike. Check availability by choosing a date.
