Description

Experience the most action-packed adventure in the Highlands of Iceland on this four-day hiking tour along the Strutur trail. If you like to escape the hustle and bustle of the city to traverse mountain passes, lakes, lush valleys, geothermal pools, and more, then this small-group guided tour is for you.

This multi-day hiking tour in Iceland begins with a convenient morning pickup in Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. You’ll meet your experienced trekking guide here, who will keep you and the rest of the hikers safe and entertained for the next four days.

From the city, the adventure takes you on a scenic ride along Iceland’s South Coast to reach the Holaskjol Highland Center. This base camp is the starting point for most hiking and trekking tours in the Icelandic Highlands.

Alternatively, you can opt to drive to Holaskjol on your own. The base camp, 37 miles (60 kilometers) from Kirkjubaejarklaustur village, is easy to locate in South Iceland through GPS or online maps.

Whether you take the pickup from Reykjavik or not, your booking includes three-night accommodations in different mountain huts, food and lunch packs, and luggage transport between the huts.

For this summer hiking experience, your small group will cover roughly 29 miles (47 kilometers) of trail in the Highlands. This Icelandic region is known for its untamed wilderness with imposing peaks, hidden waterfalls, unique lava fields, pristine lakes, and stunning vistas.

On day one, after you arrive at Holaskjol Center, your hike follows the meandering river of Sydri Ofaera and its charming waterfall. The day culminates in the breathtaking Alftavatn lake, where you’ll see calm waters embraced by rich vegetation and birdlife.

On day two, your group will traverse the trail toward the Strutur mountain hut. Some of the remarkable landscapes here are the Eldgja fissure, Svartahnuksfjoll peaks, and the Strutslaug geothermal pool. You can enjoy a relaxing thermal bath at this natural pool surrounded by incredible scenery.

Day three of your Highlands hike stretches from Strutur to Hvanngil valley. Contrasting plains of black sands and rich valleys will welcome you here. Hvanngil, where you’ll sleep in a mountain hut, has a rich history associated with sheep pasturing in the past.

The last day of your hike will give you a thrilling ride on a 4x4 vehicle back to Holaskjok Center. This adventure crosses glacial rivers, the otherworldly volcanic sands of Maelifellsandur, and the lonely mountain of Maelifell.

Toward the end of this tour, you’ll enjoy a convenient transfer back to your hotel in Reykjavik. As a bonus, you’ll make a stop on the South Coast’s Vik village, Reynisfjara beach, and Seljalandsfoss waterfall for photo opportunities.

Don’t miss this chance to conquer the wild terrain of Iceland’s Highlands on this summer hiking tour departing from Reykjavik. Check availability now by choosing a date.

Day 1
A panoramic view of the Highlands of Iceland with the Alftavatn lake seen in the distance.

Day 1 - Reykjavik to Holaskjol and Alftavatn Lake

Your exhilarating four-day hiking adventure begins with a morning departure from Reykjavik, the vibrant capital of Iceland. From here, you'll embark on a captivating drive that will take you from the bustling cityscape to the serene wilderness of the Icelandic Highlands.

As you leave the city behind, the landscape transforms, revealing the stark wonders of the South Coast. Your journey unfolds with awe-inspiring vistas of jagged terrain, glacial rivers, and the occasional glimpse of glaciers in the distance.

Your first destination is the Holaskjol Highlands Center. Many hiking tours to the Highlands begin in this area because of its excellent location and amenities. The guide will introduce you to the area before beginning your trek.

The first leg of your trek leads you along the picturesque Sydri Ofaera river. Along this river, you'll have the opportunity to marvel at a beautiful waterfall. The cascading waters of this unnamed attraction will add more excitement to your walk.

As you continue your hike, keep an eye out for the striking pillar rock formations that rise from the earth. These bizarre formations define the diverse geology of Iceland, which you'll hear more about from your English-speaking tour guide.

The true highlight of your day awaits at Lake Alftavatn, a tranquil oasis nestled in the heart of the Icelandic Highlands. Lake Alftavatn's natural splendor is a sight to behold, boasting a main lake surrounded by smaller bodies of water and streams. The area's lush vegetation starkly contrasts the rugged terrain of the Highlands, offering a refreshing burst of color and life.

During summer, the lake is also a haven for birdlife, with different species making it their home.

This stunning location will also serve as your first overnight stop in a cozy mountain hut, offering a warm and welcoming retreat after a day of exploration.

The first day of your trek covers roughly five miles (eight kilometers) of trail for four to five hours, depending on your pace.

Day 2
Eldgja volcanic canyon stretches for miles in Iceland.

Day 2 - Alftavatn Lake to Strutur Mountain Hut

The second day of adventure begins with an exploration of the enchanting Alftavatn lake area. For this day, you'll hike approximately seven to eight hours, having 13.5 miles (21.8 kilometers) of trail.

As you journey deeper into the Icelandic Highlands, you'll find yourself venturing off the beaten path, leaving behind the familiar comforts of roads and civilization.

As you traverse this rough terrain, watch for the graceful presence of swans and waterfowl, adding a touch of wildlife to your trek. The tranquil lakes and serene rivers are often home to these magnificent creatures.

Your hike will then take you through the awe-inspiring Eldgja fissure, a geological wonder that stretches for 25 miles (40 kilometers), showcasing the power and majesty of volcanic forces. It is one of the longest volcanic canyons in the world from an explosive eruption centuries ago.

Alongside the trail, you'll be captivated by the Svartahnuksfjoll ridges, aptly named the "black mountains" for their striking and darkened appearance.

The highlight of your day awaits as you reach the Strutslaug geothermal pool. Strutslaug offers a natural geothermal hot spring where you can unwind and soak in the soothing waters. The experience is nothing short of magical, as you immerse yourself in the relaxing embrace of the Earth's geothermal energy.

Please note that this geothermal pool has no dressing rooms or facilities, emphasizing the untouched nature of the area. But fret not, as you won't encounter tourist crowds in the area because of the remote location.

From Strutslaug, the group will trek for around 1.5 hours to reach the Strutur hut. As you settle in the hut, surrounded by the untamed landscapes and the memories of the day's adventures, you'll prepare dinner with the group before retiring for the night.

Day 3
Rivers, mountains, and glaciers are familiar sights on your hike in the Icelandic Highlands.

Day 3 - Strutur Hut to Hvanngil Valley

The third day of your hiking tour in the Highlands of Iceland opens with a beautiful view of the surrounding vistas of Strutur. Before leaving the mountain hut, you'll enjoy a simple breakfast and prepare lunch packs with your guide and the rest of the group.

Your trek continues by crossing over the small mountain ridge known as Vedurhals. Mountains and volcanoes of different elevations await you in this area of the Highlands region.

From the mountain passes, the scenery will turn dark and moon-like upon reaching the vast expanse of Maelifellsandur. Here, you'll find yourself surrounded by striking black sands with volcanic origins.

Amidst the dark plains, you'll encounter the intriguing Slysaalda ridge, a place steeped in the rich history of hidden outlaws and the tragic events of 1868 that your guide will discuss. This desolate yet enchanting terrain holds stories of a bygone era, where tales of survival and hardship echo through the centuries.

En route to the Hvanngil valley, you may be treated to a splendid view of the imposing Maelifell mountain, a natural wonder that dominates the horizon. However, you'll have even more opportunities to admire this majestic peak on the final day of your tour.

Your day's trek culminates as you reach the Hvanngil valley. The Hvanngil hut, your resting place for the night, awaits you on one side of the valley. Hvanngil valley has a rich history as a grazing area and resting stop for sheep farmers.

In the past, Icelandic farmers would gather their flocks here during the annual sheep round-up, a vital event in rural life. The valley provided ample grazing land and a peaceful haven for both the farmers and their herds.

Like the previous nights, your group will prepare a delicious dinner before calling it a night. Don't forget to gaze outside to see the fantastic landscapes of the Highlands under the midnight sun.

Your hike today covers 11 miles (18 kilometers) of trail for seven hours.

Today, you'll set aside your hiking gear for a thrilling off-road excursion as a 4x4 vehicle arrives to whisk you away on the journey back to the Holaskjol Highland Center. It's a chance to savor the scenic landscapes one last time from a different perspective.

As you traverse the mountain road of Maelifellssandur, you'll make a stop at the mysterious Maelifell mountain. This solitary peak is a testament to the rugged beauty of the Icelandic Highlands. With its lush green surroundings and contrasting black sands, Mount Maelifell is a striking masterpiece of nature.

Your journey continues, leading you through diverse landscapes, with the black sands stretching out around you and moss-covered hills as a backdrop. The panoramic views of the imposing Myrdalsjokull glacier provide a fitting finale to your Highlands adventure.

These locations offer a chance to savor the awe-inspiring Iceland's South Coast with its craggy cliffs, cold waters, crashing waves, and volcanic sands.
