Two-Day South Coast Adventure | Sightseeing and Glacier Hiking

Join one of Iceland’s most classic tours, and spend two days exploring the many sites of South Coast, both famous and little known.

This tour is conducted under the eye of an experienced, friendly guide, in a comfortable minibus. This means that you will have a semi-private and very personal experience.

The sites of the south are diverse and many; you can expect to see waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes and the black sand beaches. At one of these glaciers, you will hike across its surface, meaning this tour packs in as much adventure as it does sightseeing.

Some of the more famous places you will head to include Skaftafell Nature Reserve and the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, both within the Vatnajökull National Park. Your guide, however, knows all of the nooks and crannies of the South Coast, so will make sure you see some spots without the crowds.

Don't worry about any specialist equipment; the tour includes waterproof mountaineering boots, technical glacier equipment and extra rain gear. Just make sure you have sturdy boots and warm clothing.

Don't miss this awesome exploration of Iceland's south. Check availability by choosing a date.

Daily itinerary

Day 1 - Day 1

Two-Day South Coast Adventure | Sightseeing and Glacier Hiking

Early on day one, your guide will pick you up at your accommodation, and your group will depart from Reykjavík. Driving along the South Coast of Iceland is a wonderful experience in itself, with its small fishing villages, beautiful seascapes, rolling fields and wealth of history.

The first stop will be at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s most popular sights. It is possible to walk in a circle around the falling water in clear weather. The next stop is Skógafoss, another falls with a much heavier flow and greater spray.

You will have lunch at a bistro at near the charming village of Vík, before walking down a haunting black sand beach called Reynisfjara. Here, you can admire the sea-stacks of Reynisdrangar, and watch the notoriously powerful waves of Atlantic Ocean breaking on the beach (from a safe distance of course).

In the afternoon, the group will head to the Skaftafell Nature Reserve, a hiker's and photographer's paradise. This beautiful oasis is home to glacier tongues, lagoons, waterfalls, lava fields and river systems, and is a joy to explore.

You will retire in a hotel organised for you for the night.

Day 2 - Day 2

Two-Day South Coast Adventure | Sightseeing and Glacier Hiking

After an included breakfast, your group will depart the hotel and drive further east, to the popular and spectacular Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. Here, the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier calves mighty icebergs into a vast, azure lake. While marvelling at such a beautiful site, don't forget to keep an eye out for seals, which call the lagoon home.

You will head to the Diamond Beach during your stay here, which is adjacent to Jökulsárlón; the icebergs, after finally drifting out to the ocean, wash on the shore here.

In the afternoon, you will return to Skaftafell, and go for a glacier walk on the Svínafellsjökull  with your certified glacier guide. All technical equipment is introduced in detail before you explore, allowing you to have an adventure that is as safe and educational as it is beautiful and awe-inspiring.

After this excursion, you will take a scenic ride back to Reykjavík.
