Description
Experience the captivating nature of Iceland with this semi-private ice-caving tour of the Katla ice cave. This tour is perfect for adventurers who want to explore one of the most active volcanoes in South Iceland, its fascinating ice caves, and its picturesque surrounding landscape.
The tour starts at Vik, where you will meet your guide at the bus parking lot behind the Ice Cave Cafe. You will ride a super jeep from the cafe and travel north to the Katla ice caves, located within the Kotlujokull glacier, a tongue of the larger Myrdalsjokull glacier.
Katla subglacial volcano is one of the most incredible volcanoes in Iceland because it is hidden under the Myrdalsjokull glacier, one of the largest ice caps in Iceland. The volcano has erupted twenty times since Iceland’s settlement but is closely monitored for the safety of adventurers here.
Your guide will provide the proper ice caving equipment to enjoy the tour safely. Upon entering the caves, you will be welcomed by the fantastic views of ice walls and ice sculptures carved by nature.
In some of the caves, you can also see walls made of dark and blue ice, also known as dragon glass. Be sure to bring your camera so you will have pictures to remember these magical experiences inside Katla's ice caves.
The Katla glacier adventure lasts around 90 minutes, enough to explore more than one ice cave in the area. If the conditions are right, you may have time for a short hike on the glacier.
After exploring the Katla ice caves, you will move to Hjorleifshofdi, a 725-foot (221 meters) mountain on the South Coast of Iceland. The peak was once an island, but volcanic eruptions in South Iceland have connected the island to the mainland.
The mountain is famous to Star Wars fans for its appearance in Star Wars: Rogue One. Likewise, the mountain features a recently found attraction called Yoda Cave, which has an entrance resembling the figure of the famous Star Wars character.
After exploring the mountain, you will visit a deserted black sand beach nearby for the final stop of your semi-private tour. After a long journey, this is the best place to relax, near the ocean and away from large crowds.
Your private guide will then return you to the meeting point.
During the whole tour, you will be accompanied by an English-speaking guide. Your guide is your number one source of knowledge about the area, so don't be shy to ask them questions, from safety rules to the history of the sites you visit.
The whole tour is rated easy to moderate because there isn't a lot of heavy hiking. However, people with low mobility may have a hard time with it.
Visit the magical Katla ice caves, walk atop the stunning glacier, and enjoy the view of the Hjorleifshofdi mountain, all on this three-hour semi-private tour from Vik. Check availability now by choosing a date.
