This winter snowmobile tour from Lake Mývatn in north Iceland has two alternative routes.
This winter snowmobile tour explores north Iceland, in areas such as Lake Mývatn and Krafla.

Drive across the snowy landscapes of north Iceland with this snowmobiling trip from Lake Mývatn. This is the perfect adventure for those seeking marvellous landscapes and adrenaline-pumping adventure.

You can begin this tour by meeting your guides at the snowmobiling base camp near Lake Mývatn. Your friendly guides will introduce themselves to you here, and provide you with a quick safety briefing and all necessary equipment; make sure you bring warm clothes so you'll be comfortable throughout your journey.

Once your group is ready, you’ll head to the snowmobiles. Only qualified drivers can operate them, but passengers need only to be over six years old. After mounting, you will set off on your adventure, and where you go depends on the time of year.

In early and late winter, you will explore one of Iceland’s most volcanic regions, the Krafla system. This area has undergone over twenty eruptions since the settlement and is thus defined by stark, jagged lava fields, volcanic cones, and a caldera with a diameter of ten kilometres.

The reason for the volcanism of this area is because the Mid-Atlantic Rift, which separates the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, runs directly beneath it.

In midwinter, your journey will be quite different; you will shoot across the frozen surface of Lake Mývatn itself. This adventure will introduce you to spectacular snowscapes, as well as many fascinating geological features such as pseudocraters and basalt pillars. Don’t worry about the ice’s sturdiness; north Iceland is by far cold enough to ensure that such a trip is safe.

Both journeys will last approximately an hour and involve a stop for photographs and to learn about the surrounding nature from your knowledgeable guide. If your passenger is another driver, you can use this opportunity to switch seats.

Do not miss this thrilling experience in the winter wonderlands of north Iceland. Check availability by choosing a date.
