Fully immerse yourself in Iceland’s winter, with this three-day tour to Landmannalaugar and the Golden Circle. This trip is a concoction of classic Icelandic experiences; you will have opportunities for sightseeing, northern lights hunting, hot-spring bathing, snowmobiling and riding in a super jeep.

Landmannalaugar is an incredible highland area almost exclusively visited in summer; this trip, therefore, will be taken far from any crowds, allowing you to reconnect with nature. You will spend two nights in lodges within the reserve, which means you fall asleep and awake amongst incredible landscapes, and have plenty opportunities to hunt for the aurora borealis.

The rhyolite mountains and lava landscapes of Landmannalaugar will be concealed with snow, but this only changes the beauty of the area, rather than lessening it. It also allows you to snowmobile across the majestic land, reaching places and attaining views that would otherwise be inaccessible.

Of course, the weather outside has no impact on the geothermal forces at work beneath the surface of the earth, so the hot springs that make the region famous will still be flowing. There are, therefore, many pools and rivers you can bathe in to warm up and unwind from your adventures.

Though visiting Landmannalaugar is a unique opportunity in winter, you will also get to take the classic sightseeing route of the Golden Circle. The destinations here are the famous Þingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss Waterfall.

Do not miss this opportunity to see Iceland’s winter at its very best. Check availability by choosing a date.

Daily itinerary

Day 1 - The Saga Valley

The winter snows do not bother Icelandic horses

On day one, you will be picked up from Reykjavík in a super jeep able to handle the challenging, icy roads ahead, and taken along the South Coast. On this route, you will make a stop at a viewpoint overlooking the notorious volcano Hekla.

You will then turn into the highlands, and begin to drive along the banks of Iceland’s longest river, the Þjórsá, stopping once more when you reach the waterfall Hjálparfoss, a highland oasis.

After enjoying this site, you’ll travel through the ominous Sprengisandur desert. Even though its haunting black sands will be covered in snow, the vast expanse of emptiness will still feel unsettling.

After lunch at a highland centre, your guide will take you through the Fjallabak Nature Reserve, a beautiful region of mountains, lava fields, and snaking rivers. Two highland lakes will pass you by before you stop at the greatest in the area, Lake Frostastaðavatn, and marvel over its scale and colouration.

Finally, after many hours of scenic driving, you’ll arrive at your huts in the depths of Landmannalaugar. While your guide prepares dinner, you can unwind from the journey in the beautiful hot springs.

After eating, you can either retire to the lodge, return to the hot springs, or hunt for the Northern Lights.

Day 2 - Geothermal Pool - Snowmobiling - Hiking

Your Landmannalaugar lodge awaits

Day two will be spent making the most of your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore Landmannalaugar in winter. While adverse weather may limit your options, there will be plenty of things to do so long as it’s short of a blizzard.

The most exciting option is snowmobiling. This activity will allow you to scale the rhyolite mountains to attain unbelievable views of Iceland’s interior, while getting your adrenaline pumping. You need a valid driver’s license to partake in this activity unless you just want to be a passenger.

Another option your guide will offer is to take you on the super jeep to some of Landmannalaugar’s greatest spots, including lakes, mountains, valleys, and more hot-spring-areas. Of course, if you’d rather just relax, you can stay in the hot river by your hut all day long.

If the weather is clear, you may be allowed to take some hikes; your guide, however, must weigh the risks of allowing you to do this without them, as the weather can change in a second in the highlands, and you don’t want to get lost out here in winter.

For the evening, prepare for more hot-spring bathing and northern lights hunting before retiring.

Day 3 - Golden Circle

Gullfoss is included on the tour to Landmannalaugar.

On your third day, you will leave Landmannalaugar, and take the beautiful drive out of the highlands, and onto the Golden Circle route.

Though this is the most popular tourist trail in Iceland, you will still avoid most of the crowds, as you will approach the route in the opposite direction to those coming from Reykjavík.

The first site you will come to is the country’s most famous waterfall, Gullfoss. Plunging in a glacier-carved canyon in two powerful tiers, it is a mesmerising feature to behold. In winter, you can expect the rocks around it to be caked in ice, and large parts of the falls to be frozen over.

Next, you will come to the Geysir Geothermal Area, in the colourful Haukadalur Valley. Here, you can watch the geyser Strokkur erupt several times (it goes off every five minutes or so), and admire the other seething hot springs. Geysir itself can also be seen but is currently in a period of inactivity.

Finally, you will reach Þingvellir National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located directly between the edges of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, this is a place of great geological importance, to say nothing of its value historically, being the original site of Iceland’s first parliament from 930 AD.

After enjoying the Golden Circle, you’ll return to Reykjavík, marking the end of these three incredible days of adventure.

Do this trip. Cross your fingers that you get Olafur (Oli) as a guide. The food was AMAZING. The views were spectacular. This tour is for those who want a truly Islandic Experience. We had the best trip and met some fabulous people...bring wool socks and RUBBER shoes forget the hiking boots. You haven't lived until you fun naked in the snow from a volcanic heated geothermal pool in the dark (Oli will give you the tips on how to survive...just do it!)

The trip is truly amazing and our guides Atli and Arni (hopefully I had their names written correctly) were just fantastic. They were informative and super nice, taking care of all the needs of 14 people from everywhere of the world. We couldn't have asked for anyone better. In addition, their super jeeps were incredible as well. We did all those interesting activities promised in the schedule, thanks to the weather gods, and we saw the northern lights, the milky way and many more surprisingly beautiful sites. We also made friends within the 3 days. This trip was truly worthwhile and unforgettable.
