Experience in one day all the most popular tourist attractions in North Iceland, some hidden gems as well. You'll explore waterfalls, lava fields, volcanos, geothermal areas and famous filming location, but the TV show Game of Thrones along with some well-known films, such as Fate of the Furious, Star Wars and Prometheus, were filmed in the area.

It is a wonderful, fully guided 10 hour day tour to Lake Mývatn, some interesting sites of the Vatnajökull National Park, including the spectacular waterfall Dettifoss where you can enjoy a different kind of landscape every 30 minutes.

The tour starts in Akureyri, an exciting and energetic town with about 20.000 inhabitants. First, we drive along the side of the Eyjafjörður fjord and one the way you can enjoy the view of the beautiful mountains surrounding the fjord, the town and the ocean.

The first stop is at Goðafoss waterfall, not just a beautiful waterfall but a famous landmark related to the Christianisation of Iceland. From the waterfall, the journey continues to Lake Mývatn where we explore unique pseudocraters and a lava labyrinth formed when a partly cooled lava lake drained out.

From the Lake Mývatn district, we head further east, over Námaskarð mountain pass to take a short stop at a high-temperature area with spectacular fumaroles and boiling mud pools.

Now we drive further into the highlands, entering the Vatnajökull National Park. We explore the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon, 25 km (15 mi) long and over 100 meters (330 ft.) deep, formed in a catastrophic, glacial flood after the last ice age. On our way along the canyon, we'll make a few stops. The first one is probably the highlight of the day, the mighty Dettifoss waterfall, Europe´s most powerful waterfall. Our next stops in the Vatnajökull National Park are Hljóðaklettar (Echo Cliffs) and Ásbyrgi, a horseshoe cliff formation.

After a stop in Ásbyrgi, we tip the Tjörnes peninsula on our way to Húsavík, a small fishing town known as the centre of whale watching in Iceland. At the end of the day, we drive back to Akureyri where the estimated arrival time is around 18:10.
