Description
Hop aboard this sightseeing tour to make the most of Iceland’s urban and natural landscapes. This trip will show you all of Reykjavík’s greatest sites, as well as the three legendary destinations on the famous Golden Circle.
You will start this tour when picked up in a minibus and begin by exploring the capital of Iceland. Reykajvík is a city with over a millennium of history, a vibrant culture, beautiful street-art and many feats of modern architecture.
Sites you will see include the restaurant, exhibition centre and viewpoint Perlan, the church Hallgrímskirkja, the concert hall Harpa, the residence of the President, the pond of Tjörnin, and the Höfði House, where seeds were first sewn to end the Cold War. You will also enjoy Reykjavík’s nature throughout; Faxaflói bay is stunning, and Esja, on the other side of it, is a beautiful tabletop mountain.
Your guide will tell you about every site. After you have gotten to know the city thoroughly, they will take you to your larger coach, where you will change vehicle. From here, you will set off on the Golden Circle.
The first site on this route is Þingvellir National Park, which sits right between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The valley has mossy lava fields, patches of forests, and many springs trickling into the largest lake in Iceland, Þingvallavatn. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it was where the country’s parliament was founded in 930 AD.
After Þingvellir, you will move on to the Geysir Geothermal Area. Alongside the Blue Lagoon, this is probably Iceland’s most famous site. As its name suggests, it is home to the geysers, although Geysir itself is inactive. You instead will be watching Strokkur, which erupts every five to ten minutes, to heights that can well exceed 20 metres.
Finally, you will head to Gullfoss waterfall, the last site on this tour. Gullfoss falls in two tiers into a deep canyon with enormous power; all in all, it is over thirty metres high. You can watch it from many platforms, and in summer, one opens up right beside the crest of the falls; stand here, and have the glacier water spray refreshingly in your face.
