The lava formations around Lake Mývatn are hunting and eerie to look at.
The lava fields in North Iceland sometimes look like they belong to the surface of the moon.

Immerse yourself in the incredible wilderness of the Lake Mývatn area by exploring the mystical lava fields of the Krafla Volcano eruptions. This excursion should not be missed by avid hikers fascinated by North Iceland’s diverse landscapes and volcanic terrain.

Your adventure begins with a pickup around noon when you will meet your experienced local guide and the rest of your small group of travel companions. Then, it is time to strap on those hiking boots and begin traversing the rugged terrain surrounding the renowned Lake Mývatn area.

Krafla Volcano is a caldera boasting near thirty eruptions in recorded history. The lava fields which you will be exploring were largely created by massive eruptions not too long ago—or between the years 1975-1984.

These fields are therefore incredibly young and provide a unique opportunity to experience first-hand how our Earth goes through a constant process of rebirth through its own geological activities. Your expert local guide will give you a rare insight on how this activity influenced not only the entire visage of the area, but also the people who live in such close proximity to the eruptions.

Rest assured that the hike through this rough terrain will be slow enough for you to enjoy its sceneries to their fullest and take plenty of photos, so remember to pack your camera and preferably an extra memory card.

Many of the older lava fields in Iceland are covered with moss, but these young fields stretch out barren before your eyes. Expect to see layers upon layers of glistening lava formations in a parade of different colours.providing for a unique insight into the powers that shape the land of ice and fire.

Don’t miss out on experiencing this volcanic paradise in an excursion that is any hiker’s dream come true. Check availability by choosing a date.
