Come and climb one of Iceland's most iconic cliffs on this exciting hiking and climbing tour. This 4-hour hike starts in the historic Herjólfsdalur valley where the first settler in the Westman Islands built his home. His name was Herjólfur, lending the valley its name.
To conquer the Elephant, we start our journey hiking up to Blátindur summit, the second-highest point in the Westman Islands, standing 273 meters above sea level. This part of the hike is quite easy, but when we approach the summit, we need to connect to safety lines to fulfil security measures on the mountain. During a clear day, you can experience an incredible panoramic view of the surrounding islands and the mainland in the north. For example, Mount Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull glacier - both active volcanos.
Next, we hike along the ridge to the west from Blátindur to Halldórsskora slope. At the bottom of Halldórsskora, we again attach to fixed safety lines and hike the western cliffs of the island. To make the trail easier, we have fixed rims into the cliff along the way, down to the Elephant Rock.
When we have reached the destination, the top of the Elephant Rock, you can have your picture taken from a distance, where the whole Elephant Rock can be seen with you standing on its head! Enjoy your time on the Elephants head, take pictures and explore nature. The puffin burrows in that area so you can watch him closely if you visit from May-August.
The way back will be different. We take a shorter trail, through Tíkartær, where you will learn the story of Kaplagjóta. The tour ends at our base, Saltaberg, where you can enjoy an Icelandic surprise!
Grab your hiking shoes and conquer the steeps hills of Elephant rock. Check availability by choosing a date.
