Snowmobile across the largest glacier in Europe and explore an ice cave, with this fantastic combo tour in southeast Iceland. This excursion should not be missed by winter travellers looking for a great adventure.
You will begin this tour at the gorgeous Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, a vast lake that is filled with enormous icebergs, breaking away from a tongue of Vatnajökull glacier. Make sure you get here early enough to have a little explore the area and the adjacent Diamond Beach, as these are amongst the most sought-out destinations in the country.
At your meeting time, you’ll find your guide and group and board a super jeep. This will take you through some spectacular scenery, until you mount the ice cap where your snowmobiles are waiting.
You’ll be provided with all the equipment necessary to partake in this activity, such as overalls, gloves, a helmet, and crampons for the ice caving component of the tour. Just be sure to wear warm clothes, decent shoes, and a valid driver’s license.
Once you are mounted, the adventure will truly begin. You’ll zip across the incredible snowy landscapes of Vatnajökull, admiring the fantastic views all around, experiencing a perfect combination of sightseeing and adventure.
Once you reach your ice cave, you will hop off your snowmobile to enter. Your guide will tell you about the safety and how they form before they show you inside.
Ice caves are mesmerisingly beautiful; their colours, of electric blues, intense whites and strange, swirling veins of black ash, contrast against each other spectacularly, and the textures are otherworldly. You’ll have about twenty minutes to marvel and take photos before hopping back on your snowmobile and racing back to the super jeep.
