Summary
Description
Discover one of the most beautiful hidden attractions of East Iceland on this private sightseeing tour of Studlagil canyon. Nature lovers who want an adventure away from the hustle and bustle of the city’s tourist crowds will love the experience this private tour offers.
This private tour in Iceland begins at your chosen pick-up location in Egilsstadir, the capital of East Iceland. Convenient pick-up and drop-off services are also available if you’re coming from the neighboring town of Seydisfjordur.
Egilsstadir and Seydisfjordur are two central towns in the remote region of East Iceland, 391 miles (630 kilometers) from Reykjavik. While Egilsstadir is a beautiful settlement by the Lagarfljot lake, Seydisfjordur is a charming coastal village that nestles in a fjord of the same name.
You’ll meet your friendly guide, who doubles as a driver, at the meeting point. They will be your primary source of information and assistance for the next five hours. As you enjoy the region’s awe-inspiring nature, you’ll hear fascinating facts, trivia, and local stories.
First to see is the majestic Rjukandi waterfall, one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland. This natural attraction, also known as Rjukandafoss, cascades from a towering cliff of 305 feet (93 meters). Seeing it up close requires a short and easy walk on flat terrain.
Not far from here is the exceptional Studlagil canyon, the highlight of your excursion. Studlagil is one of the most famous canyons in Iceland because of its iconic basalt columns reaching a height of 98 feet (30 meters).
The hexagonal basalt columns lining up the canyon walls are stunning to see up close. Those interested in lava and rock formations will find Studlagil the perfect site to explore.
Jokla, also known as Jokulsa a Dal, runs through the ravine with its unique blue-green waters. The color of the water against the dark basalt columns creates a contrasting image that gives you the best subject for photography and sightseeing.
The discovery of the Studlagil canyon only happened a few years back when the river’s water level dropped due to the construction of a nearby dam. This event revealed the beautiful ravine that spans 1640 feet (500 meters).
During your tour, you’ll enjoy a 30-minute hike to get the best vantage point of the East Iceland canyon. The walk is easy because the guide will lead you through the trail. In addition, you can move at your own pace since this is a private tour.
If you’re not up for the hike, you can go on the other side of the canyon to get a nice view of the basalt canyon. A metal flight of stairs leads to a viewing platform where you can admire the canyon while taking photos.
After a satisfying time at the Studlagil canyon, you’ll return to Egilsstadir or Seydisfjordur, officially ending your sightseeing tour in East Iceland.
