Daily itinerary

Day 1
Drive past mighty glaciers and icy rivers to get to the beautiful Þórsmörk valley in the Icelandic Highlands.

Day 1 - Getting to Thorsmork Valley | Glaciers & Icy Rivers

You will spend the night in a nice tent surrounded by nothing but the untouched nature. In the evening, you'll share stories, talk about your adventure day and, if you are travelling in the winter, hopefully, see the special lights that appear time to time, called the Northern lights.

The tour starts in the morning, either from Hvolsvöllur or Reykjavík and from there you will head east through the farmlands of south-western Iceland. Getting closer to Þórsmörk valley, you will be driven through the roots of the infamous volcano Eyjafjallajökull which you can also just call E15 if you are having trouble pronouncing the name of this notorious glacier volcano.

You will drive through rough road conditions to reach the famous flood scene of Gígjökull glacier tongue where the landscape changed so dramatically after a volcanic eruption in 2010. You'll be crossing unabridged and often icy glacier rivers, making this journey to Þórsmörk valley a true adventure.

When you finally reach your destination, Húsadalur valley, you will have a short hike around this scenic location. Afterwards, you can hop in a sauna and unwind after a day on the road before having a meal of traditional Icelandic lamb.

You will spend the night sharing stories, talking about your adventure day and, if you are travelling in the winter, hopefully, see the special lights that appear time to time, called the Northern lights.

Day 2 - Exploring Thorsmork | Black Beaches & Waterfalls

On the second day, you will continue your exploration of Þórsmörk valley after a nice breakfast.

Þórsmörk is a beautiful nature reserve, nestled between three glaciers and named after the Norse god of thunder, Þór. You will be driven around the scenic area, taking a look at the magical canyon Stakkholtsgjá, where you will be surrounded by tall and mighty cliffs that reach up to 100 metres high in the air, and exploring the hills of Eyjafjallajökull volcano (or E15 if you prefer).

Exciting the valley, you'll make a few stops on the scenic South Coast before returning to Reykjavík or Hvolsvöllur. The first of these stops is at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can walk behind the curtain of water for a unique view of the surrounding countryside. You will then make your way to the coastline to see the wild Atlantic waves hit the area's famous black sand beaches.
