Thorsmork Volcano Super Jeep & Hiking Tour

Based on 7 traveller reviews

From Reykjavik head south towards Thorsmork Valley, better known as the valley of Thor in the comfort of a monster truck and go volcano hiking in Thorsmork, a beautiful valley surrounded by mountains, glaciers and volcanoes.

Thorsmork valley with its wild and shrubby forest, canyons, caves, rivers and the majestic Eyjafjallajokull glacier volcano towering over the scene is truly an amazing place. This gem is a favorite location of many of the locals and a popular hiking route, so we can‘t recommend it enough. If you are a keen hiker then this is the hiking tour for you!

You‘ll be driven by a jeep to the valley as the area is inaccessible in a regular car. You will have to drive through rivers before reaching Basar from where you will be starting your 16 km hike up the Fimmvorduhals volcanoes. On the way to Thorsmork you will make a stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall which is known as the waterfall that you can walk behind. Make sure to admire the magical waterfall from both sites before continuing your drive to Thorsmork. During your 16 km hike you will see some of the effects of the famous 2010 Eyjafjallajokull eruption that closed most of Europe‘s airspace.

Please bring with good hiking shoes, warm and waterproof outdoor clothing, head-wear, gloves, packed lunch and a water bottle. If needed hiking shoes and waterproof gear can be rented from the operator for a small fee if you let them know in an advance.

Go volcano hiking in a small group setting, on this full day adventure tour available directly from Reykjavik, and see the valley of the Norse thunder god Thor. Your tour concludes with a drop off back in Reykjavik. You can expect to be back at approximately 10pm.

Please note that this hike is rated as challenging and is suitable for those in good hiking condition and with experience of hiking.

We had an amazing day and the weather held out. We didn't quite make it to the top due to no visibility at that height but instead, we made a loop and came back a different way. The hike is unbelievably beautiful and so worth it! Loved the fact that we came back a different way. It was our guides first time going that route and it is stunning!

We had absolutely beautiful weather so we were able to hike all the way to the top! We were told this is quite rare. Views are breathtaking on the drive in, but even more so while hiking. We had people of different physical abilities and our guide set a brisk pace, so only half of us actually made it to the very top. Others just waited 15 minutes-1 hour along the route. If you are an athlete or hiker it is a fun hike, otherwise it might be challenging.

This was an amazing tour, place and view is beautiful, our guide and driver are very friendly and helpful. We hiked up to the top and the scenery is awesome. We had a wonderful time.

This was an incredibly beautiful tour. The time to arrive on site is about 3 hours, the last hour or so is slow travel through a valley with plenty of shallow river crossings, holes, rocks, and bumps. This probably wouldn't be enjoyable for anyone prone to car sickness. We couldn't make the two craters we intended to visit due to dangerous winds (50+ mph), but the views and hike were still magnificent. Due to our shortened main hike, we went on another small hike in another location on the way back, also with incredible views. We also stopped at a waterfall briefly while the guide reinflated the tires for the ride back. The main hike is fairly steep and strenuous.

Wow, what an amazing tour, what amazing place and view. Our group was made out of people with very different levels of fitness, yet our guide managed to keep us together and everyone completed the hike. We couldnt hike up to the top as it was still covered in snow (in May) and it was considered unsafe by our guide. As a bonus, on our way back we stopped to inflate the tyres and I managed see the Gljufrabui waterfall - which I read about but couldnt locate it untill we drove past it in the morning. Fantastic day, and tour
