Jump aboard this affordable bus tour to the Landmannalaugar region of the Icelandic Highlands for an incredible day of hiking and hot-spring bathing. This excursion is perfect for those who wish to see this country’s stunning interior first-hand, from the peaks of the rhyolite mountains or the comfort of geothermally heated waters.

You will start this tour by boarding your bus, which has been specially modified for the highlands, at the BSI Terminal in Reykjavík; you can arrange for pick-up and drop-off here if need be. Once everyone has boarded, you will begin your drive towards Landmannalaugar.

This journey goes through the beautiful nature of Iceland’s South Coast. You will pass through rural countryside, lava fields, black-sand-beaches and geothermal areas, seeing classic features such as waterfalls, glaciers and volcanoes.

At the valley of Þjórsárdalur, you will turn inland, following the river Þjórsá to a pair of conjoining waterfalls called Hjálparfoss. You will stop here to stretch your legs and take some pictures, and Game of Thrones fans may recognise this area from a village massacre scene in Season Four.

Before reaching Landmannalaugar, you will have one more stop at the crater lake of Hnausapollur, which is 11,000 years old. Like many highland lakes, the scale of the crater and vivid blue colour of the water is awe-inspiring.

Finally, you’ll reach your destination. Landmannalaugar is sometimes called ‘the Pearl of the Highlands’, as it is the region’s most popular area. Why will become apparent very quickly; it is a spectacular place of brightly coloured rhyolite mountains, bubbling hot springs spilling into steaming rivers and panoramic views.

You will have several hours to make the most of the area. You can take the hiking trails to some particularly notable ridges or more crater lakes to take in the unbelievable landscapes, bathe in the hot springs, or mix your time here doing both.

When you have fully enjoyed what Landmannalaugar has to offer, you’ll return to the bus and take the scenic drive back to Reykjavík. En route, you will make a stop to view one of Iceland’s most active and powerful volcanoes, Hekla.

Reviews

It was a nice experience... Landmannalaugar was an amazing place to visit! It was really worthy!!! I recommended! The only negative point: It was a shame that the English guidance was not a really charming person, she was very cold and the pronunciation of her English was not really easy to understand.
