Description

Explore mountains and valleys and take in sweeping ocean views on this fantastic five-hour Westfjords hiking tour from Isafjordur. Travelers who want to see untouched nature and awe-inspiring landscapes will love this small-group hiking excursion.

The fun begins at the meeting point by the harbor in Isafjordur. Here, you'll meet your expert English-speaking guide and the other participants joining the trip. This excursion is a small-group tour, so you'll have plenty of opportunities to ask your guide questions and get to know the other guests.

Your guide will give you a safety briefing and describe the route. Then, you'll take a short minibus ride to the Seljalandsdalur ski area, the starting point for today's hike. You'll embark on your adventure from here, passing pristine lakes, trickling streams, lush moss, and towering mountains.

The route covers about 5 miles (8 kilometers), including steep uphill ascents (with a total elevation gain of around 985 feet (300 meters). It's moderately difficult, as there are no hiking trails here — you'll be covering rough ground, but it shouldn't be a problem for anyone who hikes regularly. Your guide will be with you every step of the way to lend a hand and offer support.

Your group will determine the walking pace, and you'll have time to rest while you eat lunch. The hike usually lasts about four to five hours, meaning it's manageable for those with a reasonable fitness level.

After about an hour of trekking, you'll reach the base of the Thjofatindar mountain. Soak in the incredible views of its twin peaks and pause to snap some photos.

You'll take a route that zig-zags between the two peaks, where you'll be rewarded for your efforts so far with spectacular views over the fjords and mountains surrounding you. Keep an eye out for the golden plover, a bird with distinct black and gold plumage that lives in the area.

You'll take a break here and enjoy the packed lunch that you've brought with you. There's no better place for a picnic with views over the fjords and dramatic landscapes. You can also take a moment to rest and recover.

Feeling refreshed, you'll descend into the beautiful valley on the other side of the pass. After trekking through more fields of wildflowers in the shadow of stunning mountains, you'll reach the quaint village of Hnifsdalur. A minibus will take you back to the meeting point in Isafjordur.

Don't miss this immersive hiking tour through the spectacular scenery of the untouched Westfjords. Check availability now by choosing a date.
