The Golden Circle is the most popular sightseeing route in Iceland. It includes three of the country’s most beautiful natural attractions: Thingvellir National Park, Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss Waterfall.

Thingvellir National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage site where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates slowly pull apart. It is also home to Iceland’s original open-air parliament, the Althingi, founded in 930 AD. Parking costs 1,000 ISK for a standard car as of 2026. License-plate cameras collect the fee automatically, and payment covers all park lots for the day.
Geysir Geothermal Area — the original Geysir, which gave geysers their name, is now mostly dormant. The nearby Strokkur is the one you will usually see erupt. It shoots water 15 to 20 meters into the air about every 6 to 10 minutes. Allow 30 to 45 minutes to see several eruptions and explore the nearby hot springs and fumaroles.
Gullfoss Waterfall — a two-tiered waterfall on the Hvita River, fed by the Langjökull glacier. Viewing platforms are free to access. In winter, the upper path is often closed for safety, but the main viewpoint by the parking area stays open year-round.
Popular add-on: Kerid Crater — many Golden Circle itineraries add a detour to Kerid, a 6,500-year-old volcanic crater lake on private land. There is a service fee of 700 ISK per person, and a short walking loop around the rim.
New add-on: Reykjabod Hot Springs — Opening 20 August 2026 in Hveragerdi, Reykjadalur Valley, this geothermal complex makes an easy final stop on a Golden Circle tour. Classic admission starts at 7,900 ISK (65 USD). The Signature pass costs 15,900 ISK (130 USD) and includes access to a Nordic bathhouse with ten sensory spaces.

You can stay in Reykjavik hotels for convenience or book a room at one of the Golden Circle hotels to reach the sights earlier. From 20 August 2026, you can also end the route with a soak at Reykjabod Hot Springs in Hveragerdi.
