Explore the magical world of an ice cave on this once-in-a-lifetime excursion. Starting in the capital city, this tour takes you to the glacier Mýrdalsjökull, which sits over one of the largest and most infamous volcanoes in Iceland, Katla.

You will be picked up in Reykjavík in the morning and whisked away to the South Coast of Iceland. You’ll travel in a small vehicle which means that this tour will always be comfortable and personalized, and you won’t be overwhelmed by other guests.

The drive to Katla takes a few hours but goes along Iceland's very scenic South Coast. This region is famed for its rolling countryside, volcanic peaks, black sand coastline, and iconic waterfalls.

After a couple of quick stop in the little towns of Hvolsvöllur and Vík, you will head on towards Mýrdalsjökull for your ice caving experience. The vehicle you will take to the glacier is an excellent super jeep, perfect for the icy, gravel tracks that lead to the cave.

Once you reach Mýrdalsjökull, you put your helmet on, strap crampons over your boots, and head over to the ice cave. These incredible formations are created by both running meltwater which carves a channel through the glacier, as well as geothermal heat beneath the ice which opens a path into it.

Ice caves are renowned for their unreal beauty and rarity, so the opportunity to explore one is incredible. The contrast of the surrounding black lava and ash frozen in the glacier, against the blue and white ice, is breathtaking and will provide some incredible photo opportunities.

Once you have explored the cave enough to fully appreciate its beauty, you will board the vehicle again and make your way to Reykjavík. However, the adventure is not over as you will stop at two incredible waterfalls on your way back.

First, you’ll check out the thundering Skógafoss waterfall where you can marvel at the power of this towering waterfall and learn all about the legend of the secret treasure that it hides. Then it is time to visit Seljalandsfoss, a stunning waterfall, plummeting off a concave cliff into a little stream that runs through grassy fields. There is a path that takes you all the way around the falling water, for some incredible, unique views.

Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to see Mýrdalsjökull glacier, Katla volcano, and the stunning ice caves. Hop on board for the adventure of a lifetime. Check availability by choosing a date.

We can’t say enough about this tour. There were only 3 of us starting in Reykjavík (with others joining in Vík), so our ride to and from was very conversational. Our guide was pleased to answer any questions, and shared so much about his experiences in Iceland. The caving pet of the tour was lovely, and we learned a lot about how glaciers and ice caves form. Our guide was patient, and offered to take pictures for everyone. We stopped at Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss on the way back to Reykjavík, and heard some wonderful stories along the way. All in all, a wonderful experience!

This was by far the best tour I have been on. All of the scenes were breathtaking. All of the pictures that I posted during this tour brought a lot of commotion in my inbox! Many of my friends and family want to do the same tour when they visit Iceland. Our tour guide was great as well. Good personality, very knowledgeable and also funny! The tour alone is amazing, but our guide made it even better. This was my best trip yet and I am looking forward to visiting again! Thank you Iceland Tours!

AWESOME!!! It was absolutely a great trip. Besi, our guide ,was just the right mixture: informative, funny, entertaining, quiet, helpful, had the best attitude the whole trip! We were different ages, nationalities, it didn't matter, we all felt super happy and comfortable. The cave was nothing short of amazing, and the extra stop at the black sand beach a great bonus. We couldn't be happier or more grateful to him for the whole experience, because besides the grandeur of Mother Nature, his lively spirit made it all more enjoyable and special.

One of the best things I've ever done. The tour to the Ice Cave in Katla was class! I'll definitely bring great memories with me. Super recommend it!

Had a bad experience. I booked the Katla Ice Cave tour for my daughter and myself, paying about $1000 USD. Unfortunately, my daughter became ill during the night. She still got ready to go, not wanting to forfeit the trip, but had to throw up again just as we were about to leave the hotel, so that let us know we couldn't go. I alerted the tour operator and Guide to Iceland of this, but because it was an hour before, they would not give us any consideration on any refund or rescheduling on our necessary cancellation. The tour operator referred me to the tour service and the tour service says they couldn't refund any of the money because the tour service would insist they pay them, regardless. I understand why there is a 24 hour before policy on cancellations based on whim or choice, but when it is clearly no choice (I don't think they would have allowed us to go on the trip if we showed up with my daughter sick and vomiting during the tour), there should be some way to consider that problem beyond just quoting the 24-hour policy. So both my rating and my opinion of this tour service and tour operator is low because of this experience. Bobby from the U.S..
