Mt. Snaefell hiking Day tour
Reach new heights with this exhilarating day tour hiking up the domineering Mt. Snæfell, towering over the rugged and picturesque landscapes of East Iceland.
The beautiful Mt. Snæfell (“Snow Mountain”), peaking at an incredible 1446m, is the highest freestanding mountain in Iceland, not counting glaciers. It is an ancient volcano, created late during the last Ice-Age, and is instantly recognisable for its long, sweeping gradients. It is considered to be the youngest volcano in the eastern part of the country and, due to its towering height, the upper peaks are forever covered in snow, even during the summer.
Your tour will begin at the remote Snæfellsskáli mountain hut, where your knowledgeable and friendly guide will teach you the principles of safe hiking, run over the proposed route and teach you a little about the geology and formation of the mountain. They will also provide you with crampons and hiking poles if required. All you will need to bring is a good pair of hiking boots, some warm clothes and swimming gear. When everyone is ready, it’s time to venture further up into the highlands!
On this tour, you will climb the “normal” route, on the west side of the mountain, which is the most common way visitors trek to the summit. On a clear day, the views from Mt. Snæfell are awe-inspiring and overwhelming, with clear panoramic vistas across what appears like half of Iceland. Soaking in that fresh mountain air, absorbing the natural wonders around you, you’ll be thankful for the chance to snap some brilliant landscape photography.
After the hike, you will travel to Laugarfell Highland Hostel where you will relax yourself in the natural hot pools. These pools are regarded by locals for their ‘restorative powers’, and you’ll soon see why; relaxing and soaking your tired muscles at the end of your adventure.
Grab your chance today to reserve your family’s place on this rewarding mountain hike up Mt. Snæfell and you too can experience the natural majesty of East Iceland’s glorious landscapes. Check the booking availability by choosing a date.

Snaefell, in the east of the Icelandic highlands, is the highest freestanding mountain in the country. It is located within the vast Vatnajokull National Park.
This impressive mountain of 1833 meters is located northeast of Vatnajokull glacier and dominates the area by around 1000 meters. On clear days it in turn offers a magnificent view. Snaefell is an old volcano but has not seen volcanic activity for 10.000 years.
East of the mountain is the Eyjabakkar oasis with its rich flora and nesting place for pink-footed geese. The Vesturoraefi (‘Western wilderness’) is frequented by reindeer.
Laugafell is a small mountain to the north-east of the glacier Hofsjokull, in the Icelandic mid-highlands.
On the north-western slopes of Laugafell are geothermal hot springs, mountain huts that are operated in the summer and a cozy natural pool. It is thus a good destination for hikers.
