The Canyons of East Iceland | Hiking Day Tour
Hafrahvammagljúfur and Dimmugljúfur are two of the most iconic canyons in East Iceland.
You will be hiking both above and inside Hafrahvammagljúfur and Dimmugljúfur canyons.
You will be amazed by the incredible rock formations at Hafrahvammagljúfur and Dimmugljúfur canyons.
Hafrahvammagljúfur and Dimmugljúfur canyons are known for their towering cliff faces, steep slopes and dried river bed.
You will be visiting a hidden waterfall in Laugavalladalur Valley.
You will be breath taken by the staggering landscape that surrounds you in East Iceland.

Grab your hiking boots and tag along for this picturesque hike through the imposing canyons of Hafrahvammagljúfur and Dimmugljúfur.

In 2009, the Kárahnúkar Dam was officially completed, exposing a number of new hiking trails in the canyons adjacent to Jökulsá river. There is still one month where excess water from the Hálslón Reservoir pours over, filling the canyons and making them inaccessible.

When they are exposed, however, the main canyon is about 5 km long, whilst the larger corridor stretches 10 km from Desjará to Tröllagil.

Your driver will first drive passed the gigantic Kárahnúkar Dam, giving you a chance to see for yourself what is undoubtedly the most controversial construction in Iceland's history. Finally, you will come to your starting point at Hafrahvammar, where you begin hiking along the canyon riverbed. If necessary, your guide will provide you with extra equipment to make the hike more comfortable,  ie, crampons and hiking poles.

The rocky ravine around you is one of the deepest in Iceland, roughly 200m. Hiking here gives you an incredible new perspective on Iceland's nature and environment and presents ample opportunities to capture excellent photographs.

You will be hiking for roughly 5- 6 hours, and as you pass through the dramatic canyon, you will witness a wide range of natural wonders; cascading waterfalls, looming caves and naturally intricate rock formations.  This is East Iceland at its best and is not to be missed for any serious hiker, traveller or nature enthusiast.

Following your intrepid hike, you will take the opportunity to relax under a naturally warm pool and waterfall in the Laugavalladalur Valley. After a nice and relaxing soak, you will be transferred back to your accommodation.

Ensure your place on this unique hiking excursion through east Iceland’s deepest and most imposing river canyons. Check availability by choosing a date.
