Description
Step into Iceland’s icy wilderness on this Solheimajokull Glacier hiking and rock climbing tour for an active day on contrasting landscapes. With a certified guide and a small group setting, you’ll cross crevasses, try ice climbing on frozen walls, and rock climb on basalt cliffs along the South Coast.
Your 6-hour adventure starts by meeting your guide at the Solheimajokull Glacier parking lot or with a convenient pickup from Reykjavik for an added cost. The parking lot to the glacier is located on the South Coast of Iceland and is easy to reach using maps.
Your guide will provide all the gear you need, including crampons, helmets, ropes, and ice axes. With a glacier-certified guide and Wilderness First Responder at your side, safety comes first. Clear instructions ensure you feel confident before setting foot on the glacier.
The adventure starts with a glacier hike on Solheimajokull, where you’ll cross ridges, crevasses, and blue ice formations. On clear days, sweeping views of Eyjafjallajokull and nearby glaciers stretch across the horizon.
After the hike, it’s time to push your limits with rappelling and ice climbing. Secured with ropes, you’ll descend into a vertical shaft, surrounded by blue ice walls streaked with volcanic ash. At the bottom, glacier streams often flow through the ice before you climb back up the frozen wall.
Next, a short scenic drive takes you to Iceland’s basalt cliffs on the South Coast. These lava columns were formed by volcanic eruptions and provide climbing routes with different holds to match different skill levels.
Throughout the day, your guide shares insights into glacier formation and the impact of climate change on Iceland’s landscapes. With a maximum of four guests per guide, you’ll receive personal coaching, making this tour suitable for intermediate and experienced climbers.
This tour is rated challenging and requires moderate fitness, as you’ll be hiking on uneven glacier terrain and climbing both ice and rock. Although no extensive experience is needed, participants should be comfortable with physical activity and prepared for a full day outdoors in Iceland.
The tour is flexible, allowing you to spend more time on the ice, try extra rock pitches, or slow the pace to enjoy the views. If the weather changes, your guide will adjust the order of activities to make sure you have the best experience possible.
At the end of the day, your guide will return you to the meeting point.
