Come along on this small-group, full day glacier hike that takes you farther onto the ice, shows you more, and gives you the opportunity to explore the glacier tongue, as well as experience one of the most spectacular glacier environment available to the general public anywhere in the world.
You begin your tour twenty minutes before departure at the Skaftafell Nature Reserve. There, you will check in, meet your guide and get equipped with the necessary glacier and safety equipment. When you are ready, you may hop on to the mini-bus that will take you to the glacier. As it is only a 25-minute drive to the roots of the glacier, you'll get to spend up to 6-hours on the ice on this tour.
At the glacier, your guide will run through the basic principles of glacier hiking and how to use the glacier gear you've been equipped with. You will be provided with glacier crampons, ice axes, harnesses, and helmets.
Then it's time to explore the ice. You will hike far up the glacier tongue, higher than any other group on the ice. Your guide will safely lead you through deep crevasses and on top of high walls of ice where you have magnificent panoramic views of the glacier, the towering summits that surround it, and down to the Atlantic Ocean.
During your hike, your experienced and qualified guide will provide you with numerous interesting facts about the Icelandic glaciers, about the great role they have had in shaping the Icelandic environment and the curious folklore surrounding them.
After spending roughly six hours on the ice, you will head back to your mini-bus which takes you back to Skaftafell National Reserve.
