Glacier Walk on Solheimajokull Glacier

Join us for a glacier hike on Sólheimajökull, an outlet glacier of a much bigger Mýrsdalsjökull glacier. We will meet at the Sólheimajökull car park (at the end of Route 221), where we provide you with helmets, ice axes, crampons and climbing harnesses to prepare you for your tour.

Once you are all geared up, we'll hike a short 15 min hike to the roots of the glacier by a nice path which lies at the side of the mountain. Once on the ice, we will hike to Sólheimajökull plateau where we will have a great view of the glacier itself, the sea, the top of Mýrsdalsjökull, and the lid of a nearby supervolcano; Katla.

Icelandic volcanoes vary in size and activity, and this area has some of the big-bads of Icelandic volcanic activity. An example is the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull in April 2010. However, that would count as a minor eruption, even though it caused a lot of problems with air traffic in Europe, because we have the neighbouring Katla volcano, which is about to erupt as well. Katla is at least ten times more potent than Eyjafjallajokull. During Katla's last eruption, 100 years ago, the coastline east of Vik village grew five kilometres due to the floods and debris caused by the eruption. However, there is no need to worry. we are well prepared and equipped, and Katla is monitored very carefully.

We will experience the hidden secrets of the glaciers, the Moulin and the crevasses, the dirt cones and the old ash of eruptions of different periods, now visible due to the melting of the glacier. We will also learn a lot about the glacier itself and the people who study it, the glaciologists and their tools to measure the differences stages that the glaciers goes through.

The glacier itself it's a peaceful place to enjoy, feel the fresh ice under your feet and delight your eyes with its magnificent view, it's the perfect place to come to disconnect from the day-to-day world and to see nature at work.

The vast knowledge of our guide and the environment of the glacier will make a day to remember forever.
