Experience what it's like to walk on an ice cap in this exciting glacier hiking adventure tour up the dramatic Sólheimajökull Glacier. This tour is the perfect opportunity for those visitors looking to get up close and personal with an authentically Icelandic landscape.

To begin this thrilling adventure, you'll need to make your own way to the glacier hiking base camp, Ytri Sólheimar 1, located by the roots of Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Once there, you will be introduced to your friendly and experienced guide who proceed to brief you on the glacier, its origins, as well as the surrounding landscape.

It is very important not to ever try and hike up a glacier alone; the ice cap contains difficult terrain and hidden gorges, making it unsafe unless lead by a qualified individual.

Your guide will also take this time to kit you out with all of the necessary equipment for a glacier hike. You will be presented with a helmet, walking poles (if needed) and crampons to slip over your hiking boots.

When you and your group are fully equipped, you will make a 30 to 40-minute walk from the hiking base to the glacier itself. Here, you will be given a quick lesson on walking on the ice, as well as have the opportunity to ask your guide any outstanding questions you might have.

Finally, you will begin to make your way onto the glacier; amidst the open, glittering, white expanse, you will experience naturally intricate ice sculptures, shady crevasses, hidden caves and towering frozen cliffs.

Aside from the glacial environment itself, you will be blessed with incredible, sweeping views of the surrounding area. Make sure to remember your camera!

Strongly recommended tour to take in Iceland. Patient and nice tour guide, who is really knowledgable and responsible. We were late because went to the wrong meeting point but they do wait for us without a word. A wonderful experience indeed.

Our guide Ollie(?) is very knowledgable and experienced. We very much enjoyed the view as well as learning techniques of ice hiking. The only imperfection was that the map was quite misleading. Took some time to find the actual camp base. Fabulous trip nonetheless, highly recommended.

So, the hike itself is really nice. The instructions as to the "departure location" is vague; we honestly didn't realize we had to drive 2 hours from Reykjavik when booking, and when we got the address, GPS navigation sent us to ATV departure location when we arrived. But, again, those issues aside the tour itself is incredible and well worth the cost and travel.
