Conquer the ice cap by booking this popular glacier hiking tour across the out-of-this-world landscape of Snæfellsjökull glacier. If you're looking for that perfect mix between adrenaline fuelled adventure and unblemished nature, there can be no better option than strapping on your crampons and taking to the mountains!
Your 2-3 hour tour will begin at our head offices in Gufuskálar (meeting point B) where your friendly guide will run over the day's itinerary, share interesting facts about Snæfellsjökull and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and, finally, fit you with the necessary hiking equipment. This includes hiking boots, crampons, a harness, a helmet and Gore-Tex outerwear.
It is recommended that you bring with you warm, thermal layers to wear beneath the outerwear. From there, a driver will shuttle you in a 4x4 to the base of Snæfellsjökull glacier.
At an elevation of 750m, you and your tour will attire your hiking boots and crampons and begin your ascent to 880m. Don't be daunted! The 1km hike is taken at a very mellow pace, with frequent stops along the way to catch your breath and enjoy the gorgeous panoramic vistas of the surrounding area!
With the basalt cliffs of Breiðafjörður Bay to one side and the open expanse of the lowlands on the other, you'll cameras to be a necessity here, if not for the views then for the multitude of crevices, moulins and naturally intricate ice sculptures scattered along your hike.
Keeping in mind that you will be hiking in Iceland, be aware that this tour is highly dependent on weather conditions and seasonal factors, meaning hikes can only go forward if there is snow covering the glacier. The tour is usually open from July to September every year.
