Description

Explore the diverse sites of west Iceland and the magical ice tunnel into Langjökull glacier on this day tour from Reykjavík. This tour is perfect for those seeking a unique sightseeing experience with a fascinating, unusual adventure.

After your pick-up from the capital, you will be driven north, through some incredible landscapes, as you head to the western area of Húsafell. This route will reveal to you beautiful places such as Þingvellir and Kaldidalur Valley, although you will not stop at either, as you have a date with the ice tunnel.

The modified super jeep that has the capacity to reach the top of the glacier Langjökull, the second largest ice cap in Europe, is waiting for you at Húsafell. Before you board the vehicle, you will have a chance to buy refreshments and enjoy a little wander through the forested town.

Ascending the steep, snowy slopes of Langjökull is a mesmerising experience. In clear weather, you will have incredible views of the South Coast, Highlands and West, as well as, of course, across the ancient ice. The entrance to the Ice Tunnel is situated near the summit.

The Ice Tunnel is the only man-made tunnel into a glacier that visitors can explore. You will have an hour inside, led by an experienced guide, in which you will learn all about the science and history of the incredible surroundings. Crampons which will allow all to explore with ease will be provided for you prior to entry.

After enjoying this highlight of Iceland, you will descend Langjökull and return to your original vehicle. From here, you will head to the nearby waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, two of west Iceland’s most popular features. The former is serene, trickling in many rivulets from a wide lava field. The latter contrasts with it greatly, thundering down a narrow gorge, in spite of being incredibly close.

You will then head to the historic village of Reykholt. This settlement draws visitors because it was once the home of the legendary writer Snorri Sturluson, for whom there is an exhibition here. You’ll make a brief stop before seeing the highest-flowing hot spring in Europe, the awe-inspiring Deildartunguhver.

Finally, en route back to Reykjavík, you will travel around Hvalfjörður. This a beautiful, forested fjord, with stunning seascapes and dramatic waterfalls.

Don’t miss this immersive exploration of west Iceland. Check availability by choosing a date.
